Veterinary Schools: Starting At The Right Place
 If you love being with animals and have a passion for taking care of them,
then you might want to consider taking up a career in the field of
veterinary medicine. A veterinarian, or vet for short, is technically a
doctor for animals and a practitioner of veterinary medicine. If you want to
work with animals but don’t want to undergo a very long and detailed
education, then you can also choose a career as a veterinary technician or
technologist. Either way, you will need to first have proper training and
education, which can be provided to you by an accredited veterinary school.
A veterinary school is an educational institution involved in the education
and training of veterinarians. It may also serve as training grounds for
other veterinary fields such as veterinary technician or veterinary
technologists. There are numerous doctrines obtainable once you enter
veterinary school and other types of degrees as well albeit different for
each union. Like other medical fields, a career in field of veterinary
medicine is also very demanding in many aspects, and can take around 4 to 6
years to complete. Different countries will offer different type of
veterinary degrees – examples are Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) in the
US and Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (MVB) in the UK.
The curriculum for veterinary school will vary depending on country or
location. For instance, in Canada and the United States, the program usually
takes 4 years to complete. For the most part of the program, students will
be educated in the basics of biological science, which can include subjects
such as physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, histology and immunology. In the
later parts, they students will also be given exposure to the basics of
anaesthesiology, surgery, diagnostics and dentistry. Students also undergo
clinical training in the caring and handling of animals on the final year of
their program.
In the United States, veterinary schools are accredited by the American
Veterinary Medical Association or AVMA. Any individual looking to pursue a
career in veterinary education must be able to complete an educational
program properly accredited by governing bodies such as the AVMA. As
previously mentioned, veterinarians need to graduate from a 4-year program
at a veterinary school. Veterinary technicians however, need to take a
2-year Associate’s degree program while a veterinary technologist will be
required to take a 4-year Bachelor’s degree program.
In choosing a veterinary school, always check to see if they have been
properly accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Your
professors must be duly licensed in their field and have sufficient
experience as well. A good veterinary school must be able to provide its
students with support services (e.g. counselling and career placement). You
might also want to inquire about their course outline and the nature of
their clinical training as well to give you an idea of what to expect. And
most of all, make an inquiry of their admission requirements and costs too
so that you can properly assess how much you will be spending for your
